Three layers of the ecosystem

The Codex pet world sits in three layers. The official set ships with the app and updates with it. Community galleries collect user-made pets, often themed around characters or memes. Generators sit underneath both, turning a photo into a spritesheet you can install.

The official layer

Official pets are the safest bet. They are versioned with Codex, so an update never breaks them, and they follow the canvas size the app actually expects. If you just want a pet on your desktop today, start here and stop.

The community layer

Community pets are where the personality lives. You will find anime characters, game mascots, and running jokes you will not see anywhere else. The tradeoff is quality control: some packs are resized rather than re-rendered, which is why they look soft.

What actually makes a good pet

• Sharp at native canvas size, not upscaled
• Sits still enough to not distract, but has one clear idle animation
• Transparent background so it does not sit on a white box
• A pet.json whose name field matches the folder name

Making your own

Generators compress the whole loop into one upload. You pick a photo, the tool renders a pixel-art base, then a spritesheet plus pet.json. From upload to a working desktop pet is usually under five minutes.

How to judge a pack before installing

Open the spritesheet first. If the frames are cut off at the edges or the background is not transparent, skip it. A well-made pack is obvious the moment you look at the raw image.
