Pet Creation Guide: From Photo to Installable Pixel Pet
2026-08-11
A complete pet creation walkthrough: upload, generate, approve, and install your pixel-art pet. Perfect for first-time creators.
What you need before you start
A photo you like, a free PetGen account, and a few minutes. That is the entire setup.
No art skills and no software install are required to create the pet. Installation happens only at the end.
Step 1: Upload your photo
Drop a JPG, PNG, or WebP file up to 10MB. One clear subject works best.
Step 2: Review the base character
The AI returns a pixel-art base. Approve it if the look fits, or regenerate for another attempt.
This is the moment to catch a wrong read before the animation is built.
Step 3: Generate the animation set
Nine animation states are composed into a single spritesheet. These cover idle, working, and resting poses.
The sheet uses a transparent background so it drops cleanly into any UI.
Step 4: Download and install
Download the ZIP, copy the folder to your pets directory, and restart Codex. Your pet appears.
First-creation checklist
Clear photo selected. Base approved. Animation generated. Package downloaded. Installed and verified.
Frequently asked questions
How long does pet creation take?
The base character takes about 90 seconds. The full animation set with nine states takes a few minutes.
Do I need to know pixel art?
No. The generator handles the pixel rendering. You only choose a photo and approve the result.
What do I get at the end?
A ZIP with spritesheet.webp (the animation frames) and pet.json (the metadata Codex reads).
